Manage a region boundary

Once a region is approved and your account has access to its administration tools, you can create, import, replace, or restore its map boundary.

The boundary controls the public region outline and which region receives position-based map activity. It does not mean every point inside the shape has radio coverage. Confirm the intended area with the local community before importing it, and avoid unreasonable overlap with an active neighboring region.

Make the GeoJSON file

For a county-based region, Boundary Maker is a useful example tool:

  1. Select one or more states to load their county outlines.
  2. Click every county that belongs to the region. Check the selected-county count at the top.
  3. Select Download GeoJSON. The downloaded file combines the selected counties into one boundary.

You can also export a custom shape from a GIS editor. Whichever tool you use, the file must contain polygon geometry and longitude/latitude coordinates (EPSG:4326). FreqMapper accepts a GeoJSON Polygon, MultiPolygon, Feature, or FeatureCollection whose features are all polygons. Points, lines, empty collections, and projected map coordinates will not validate.

Import it in FreqMapper

Use the route that matches your access:

  • Regional admin: sign in at /region-admin, select the region if you manage more than one, then open Boundary.
  • Global admin: open Regions, expand the country and state or province, choose Edit on the region, then find Region boundary.

Regional moderators can review the boundary and its history, but cannot change it.

  1. If you are replacing a boundary, select Export current GeoJSON first if you want a separate offline copy. FreqMapper also keeps the replaced version in rollback history automatically.
  2. Choose the downloaded .geojson file. Pasting the complete GeoJSON into the text box works too.
  3. Review the outline preview, then select Validate boundary. Check the reported geometry, area, and bounds before continuing.
  4. Select Import validated boundary. Editing the file or pasted text after validation requires validating it again.
  5. For a new region, return to Region settings and change Pending setup to Active only after the boundary and the rest of the region setup are ready.

Replace or restore a boundary

Importing a replacement does not erase the previous shape. Use Boundary rollback history and Restore if the new boundary is wrong. Restoring also preserves the boundary it replaces, so the change remains reversible.
